'Ho..what?'

I have only 6 more days until I go back to NYC!

我太高兴了!我很想我的朋友和我妈妈的彩!

Last post I left off with paper cutting, that Wednesday we went to teacher's houses to learn how to cook certain dishes. I was with my roomie and Huang Laoshi who is awesome and really sweet. We went to her apartment to learn how to cook. I was suppose to cook Kong Pow Chicken and my roomie was suppose to make 糖酥鱼 but she made steamed fish instead because the other version requires too much boiling oil...

We got into the apartment and Huang Laoshi's mom already prepared the ingredient and I was the first to prepare my dish...First-- cutting the chicken breast was hard! But I did a decent job and then time to roast the peanuts! Then it was time to let my preperation chill a bit. It was Marie's turn to conquer the fish...It's her first time cutting a FULL fish, head and all so she was a little scared. She did a good job, although Huang Laoshi's mom made fun of her because Marie cut the fish with her wrist motion, but Huang Laoshi's mom showed her it needed to be with the shoulder.

After we did all the preperation, we cooked and steamed as instructed. Huang Laoshi was like I'll help eat, my place is outside the kitchen lol...She did help cut the Huang Gua (Cucumbers) xD It didn't take long to make our dishes, and we had other foods as well. There's a pork dish that her mom did that involves wraps, veggies and vingared bean sprouts... It was really yummmy! Huang Laoshi was also nice enough to drive us to the Olympic Park after dinner because she lived very close to it. She was a great hostess.

A few days earlier, this year's language fellow for MHC is our tutor this week so she decided to take Marie and I to Hou Hai at night because that's when it's really alive. We started out pretty late as the sun was setting which was good because it was realllllly hot that day. We went to a Taoist Temple first and was the last people there to look around. Then headed to HouHai district and ended up at a resturant that was named 'Wide Resturant' when in reality its tiny as hell! Wu Xuan (the tutor) wanted to try it because she heard it was famous so we ordered some wings and other little things because they are known for it. We enjoyed our snack before heading out to the bar district. As we headed to a section of Houhai, we saw a donkey as it was being lead by a woman. It was the first time we've seen one so it was def a rare sight.

The sun was setting and it got more crowded. The lake was filled with little boats being paddled by both drivers and regular people. Everywhere we turned it was bars, hookah, bars, food, people! It was a nice change from Wu Dao Kou area. Basically we walked around for a bit and took pics and returned because sadly we had work to do .

This weekend was our last weekend to ourselves and here in Beijing. It's weird to finally come to the conclusion of the program.. This program was not what I expected it to be but in some ways, I did expect other things to happen.

6 more days!

'Legit..there's a GOAT!'

Another week has come and gone and now I'm counting down the days until I reach NYC soil! :D After friday's exam I went to Xi'dan w/ my roomie to do some last min shopping for people and for myself..I got myself some ghetto/bootleg sneakers that is pretty sweet. It's brown but has rainbow colors on the side and instead of saying 'Lee' which is suppose to be the legit brand I got the 'Jee' version lol :P Got to love China for all of its faults and beauty... My roomie and I bought two cones of ice cream but once we got closer to finishing it, we both realized---huh, where did the bottom go? There was no pointy bottom!!! They jipped us out of that!!! Geez, they really try to save anything they can....

After Xi'dan, it was back to the room and grab dinner time. Went to Gou Lin near our dorm and then headed out to the Wu Dao Kou night street markets...As we passed by to go to the main street, we passed an old man doing chinese characters in the animal forms. (Like the $20 name signs in Chinatown with like pretty colors and stuff...) He did have poetry on the side which was pretty awesome! Also on the bonus side, it was only 5 KUAI! which is less than $1 USD! After getting both our names we decided to head back to our room because our signs were too precious... After doing that we headed out to actually prawl the night life at Wu... It was interesting, we got really good gummies.

Saturday--

We had to go to 798 (which sounds like 7 bars in Chinese), an art gallery. This place was fun because it showcased a bunch of different style of art and artists. We went into some pretty trippy art gallery opening. I got to drink free (cheap) wine at one of the opening. We took many pictures but the most interesting part of Sat. was at night...We all went out to Hot Pot above Pyro and ordered a shit ton of food. 3 buckets of spinach, 1 cabbage, 4-5 plates of Lambs, 2 plates of noodles and two plates of mushrooms.. This was def a feast! Afterwards, we went back to the dorm to rest and got ready to go out. We all split because some wanted to go clubbing at Mix in San Lu Tan, but the rest wanted a chill night just drinking and chilling... A few friends and I decided to go to Pyro because Lush was being renovated. We started w/ cocktails, I got Tequila Sunrise... then a Kamikaze shot, 2 shot Lemon Shot, more Tequila shots and hookah.. I got 7 shots in total and one cocktail, it was a good night lol Pyro actually had decent music and it was very lively. We didn't come back until 1am. It was def a nice night out w/ the girls.

Sunday--

Study, study and nap time!

Monday--

We had paper cutting today! And Wang Laoshi came back today from Shanghai so we're all back to going our normal selves now... I'm def counting down the days now! 9 more weekdays until I'm back in the city! <3

2) " This train is going to take forever!" ---- "No its not...It's like an orgasm, it comes and goes!"
3) " You're allergic to PENIS!" (instead of saying Peanuts)
4) " We're being violated by a pang pang $30 Kuai stuffed Panda..."

Zao Gao Zao Gao, Qi Pao Qi Pao

So today is a typical day in my life here in Beijing...I went to the hospital (again...Fourth time now...) and then came back to the dorm to get some sleep. At the doctors I was wearing a panda shirt that had pandas doing the 24 forms of Tai Chi on it. The doc was like:

Doc- I didn't know pandas did tai chi!
Me- yeah, all the time...didn't you know?

Got some lunch then zonked out! I slept from 1:30 till about 6pm. I guess I really needed sleep. After I woke up I decided it was dinner time so my roomie and I headed out to the mall where on the 5th floor there was a lot of different restaurants to choose from. We chose a new place that had decent food and good price range and it was tasty.. It might be a choice for my bday dinner.. I had baked potato w/ bacon bits and it had cucumbers in it..it was a nice mix. After that I got a large rose milk tea that was yummy and a pancake snack thing. As my roomie and I were sitting there eating and chatting there's a bball game machine next to us and the guy who 1/2 runs it was like throwing the bball into the hoop more or less in all the time..He had more ins than outs... That gathered a lot of people the area just watching him do it.. it was crazy. His score was like 700s.. Everytime he made the ball into the hoop it had a noise that sounded like 'Zao Gao! Zao Gao!" which means 'Oh no, oh no!' lol I was cracking up bc I know it couldn't have said that..

After the chowing and drinking we headed into the mall to get OJ for the sick people. However to kill more time we headed into Benko and Art Box to get little things :D We got little things but it was just funny xD because my roomie's bag was filled with Benko and Art Box things. After coming back we passed by some Westerners wearing Qi paos ...it was quite a sight.

Random point---The group of us girls was trying to cross the intersection to get back to the dorm but cars were everywhere (because it is Beijing...) and so I had this great idea of instead of crossing one to get to the other street, I just stopped in the middle of the intersection and walked up to where we had to cross and just walked onto the street we needed to get to..It was like making an Z at the intersection lol :D

Now that is aside--- I'm going back to study now for our daily quizzes...

Clean air and in need of a massage!

I just got back from the Ming Tombs--but I shall get to that later on a bit. This week has passed by fairly quickly due to stamp cutting and excursions. Friday after the weekly exam, I stayed a bit after class to make-up quizzes I missed during the time I was sick. Afterwords, we all went to Silk Street because we all needed to get stuff.. this shopping adventure only reaffirms my dis-like for shopping! I got some stuff for people but it was not fun... After that it was Saturday and we had excursion time to see acrobats! It was really cool, but the weather was cruel--it decided to pour like dogs! The highways were flooding a bit so it took us a while to reach the theater but we made it. We got our seats which was on the 3rd row which was on the left side of the theater but really close to the stage.. The show was awesome! Although I have a sneaky suspicion that some of the girls were like 7 or so of age..It was really interesting to see acrobats doing their stunts...Afterwords we grabbed dinner and I uploaded pictures to Facebook :D

So today is Sunday and my day started really early because a few friends decided to meet up at 930am to head out to the Ming Tombs because it was near the Great Wall so it takes a while to get there by public transportation. We reached the place with not that much a hassle and went on to first see the Sacred Way. The area was really breezy and clear because we weren't in the city so ha--take that pollution! We took goofy pictures and then took a bus to the first open Ming Tomb. I'm so happy we have student IDs because if not it would have been realllly expensive! Our tutor/MHC's language Fellow for 09-10 had a fake student ID which we found hilarious. You would think you'd get a fake to be older, and not younger but I guess in China it's the other way around lol After we toured around the first tomb we headed for the second one which wasn't as long because that tomb wasn't open for the public. After walking around for most of the day we went back to our dorm. We took the most expensive bus I've ever been on in China--it was 4 kuai! And we hit traffic which caused us to be on the road for 2hrs! I was playing frogger in the subway by speeding pass people! It was insane! Im sooo tired now...It's going to be a new week so .... sigh

P.S.--got sick again..got a runny nose and I keep sneezing... Just when I thought I was okay...

So Im back from the Hospital (Beijing University Hospital 3) and had to get my blood tested again to see what was wrong with me....and the conclusion is ....I have a fever apparently that's been stuck with me for 2 weeks now. I don't really think Beijing likes me that much. I just got back from the Beijing Opera where we saw 'Farewell my Concubine' and some random bank robbing skit which was kinda awesome because of the acrobats in it. We more or less dressed up even though we didn't need to but at least I wasn't doing it alone. I borrowed Nancy's dress while my roomie borrowed mine lol it was kinda funny.
The past few days have been just me in bed, eating my meals and napping lol like a true panda =_____________=ll On friday we had our midterm and our first skit was done. Guess what skit we did---going to the zoo lol I was in my panda hat just for kicks and giggles...This marks the end of our first 'semester' and the beginning of our last semster lol aka I got 4 more weeks left until I leave this place! YES! i mean booo lol I don't really know yet, haven't made up my mind bout beijing being thumbs up or down due to certain circumstances. I take the days that comes as is then try to figure it out.
I finally got through FB now so yay! But it's almost 1am so I guess I should sleep seeing how I am a sick person w/ a constant fever! lol At least it provided me warmth at the opera house lol

Hi all,
I live! Today is Saturday and our cultural excursion is to the Temple of Heaven. My expectations would be that it'd be like really grand and what-not, but alas, not to my expectations. Regardless, we had to be at the Library at 8am to get there early and beat the crowds...We arrived and walked to get there just to meet....A SHIT LOAD OF PEOPLE...as per usual. We proceeded into the different sections of the temple and took touristy pictures and goofy pictures. We had random people taking pictures of us when we did our group photos, this is a normal occurence lol. While we were at the cultural museum on Wednesday, a little boy asked my roomie what her name was and quickly snapped a picture of her xD .... Oh China.
Just now coming back from the chung(er) place, I held the door for a bunch of girls, and they said thanks in mando..But one of the girls said 4 in Italian, I thought it was Spanish so I pressed it for them. They were impressed and we had a good laugh, and then when they left they said ciao! so I knew they were Italians. It was a nice encounter. Although a few days ago, a woman who seems to be leaving the dorm she asked the people in the elevator I was in if we wanted to adopt a hair curler lol .... Life brings you interesting encounters.
Sorry I don't have much to say because I have to start thinking about a skit and studying for our mid-term on Friday also prepare for our class on Mon...sooooo STUDY STUDY STUDY!

So I was recently sick, like twice hahaha...Fever is like my best buddy right now but Im getting better...It's almost mid-term time here so got lots to study..We have a 3 person skit next friday and our midterm on top of that..But before next week, this saturday we're going to the temple of heaven and look around. On Tuesday after individual tutoring, we learned Tai Chi which was interesting, but damnnn it was slowwww! This Wednesday my roomie, our tutor and I went to the Beijing Expo 2010 to look at cultural and historical artifacts for a few hours. It was interesting although we were really tired of walking around after an hour. We didn't really do much afterwards, just dinner and the normal night rituals...

This blog is short sorry, but I will make it up during the weekend :)

Forbidden Palace, Happy Lemon, Benko, and Silk Street to come!

Saturday 7/11

We had to go to the Forbidden Palace. We left school at 8am, got to the Forbidden Palace 30 or so mins later. We waited for a while because the teachers were getting our tickets and there was mad people there. We finally got inside the Palace and whoaaaa, it’s really pretty and a longgg walk to finish. Since today was the weekend, a lot of people came out to visit it and it was really hot. The mugginess didn’t help us with the walking around, but I did bring a fan so it helped a bit. After walking around for a good 2ish hrs we headed back to school and got food. We all stopped at Happy Lemon first, which is like the Chinese version of Jamba Juice but BETTER! Their mango & orange slushie is sooo good, we all got 6 orders of that lol . After eating at the viet place again, we headed to Benko once again to get Nancy something..One of the workers from the store recognized me because I do believe this is like my 10th time there =___________=ll .. After that we left to come back to shower and rest, we were suppose to go to Xi Dan, but people were napping so a 4 girls and I went to Wu Dao Ko’er ghetto mart to shop instead. Now I’m back and writing this blog while watching Fantastic 4 with my roomie on a Korean channel in China…Tomorrow is resting, Silk Market and homework time…

Until next time..

PANDAS!! :D

~Fri 7/10/09

So I went to Propaganda tonight with the girls, and enjoyed a few drinks (even though I was told not to…sorry this is due to lack of FB that I forgot that…lol) Before Propaganda, it was Friday so after a long day of review session, oral presentation and 3 chapter exams we were suppose to head to the zoo..We (that means Marie, Lucy, WenWen, Nancy, Li Laoshi and me) ate some good sandwiches before heading to the zoo in a taxi. We got to the zoo and it was blazing hot! We got tickets and went into the zoo to find some PANDAS! I was very excited; we got to see all the pandas at the zoo. One was sooo pang pang (chubby) and was on a tree branch scratching his nose with his foot. We also saw some sleepy pandas in the zoo…

After looking at cute cuddly pandas, we went to the ‘zoo market’ to go shopping. This market was HUGEEEE! It stretched from one end to the other for like a span of 4 Avenue blocks. We walked for a lonnnng time until we finished with the span of the whole market. Eventually we went back to the dorm and we were all starving. We went to the Viet place in the mall and had a big meal, went to Benko to get another stuffed doll for my roomie..I got a smirking one that people says look like me lol …I love that store. After we stuffed ourselves and went to the supermarket to stock up on food. Then we come back and was going to head to Propaganda for some drinks and dancing. My roomie wasn’t feeling too well so I came back with her after two drinks and we chatted for a bit before sleeping.

2 weeks!, a few sprinkles of pervertedness, and FOOD!

It's now the middle of the week and I'm still alive..It's Wednesday so I figured I'm 1/2 way there before another weekend..I have 6 more weeks left until I get back to the States and see mostly all you guys (more or less...) I've been studying my butt off but been trying to have fun at the same time. Today was fun, I was really happy to begin the day (for once) and did the whole 4hrs of drilling vocabulary into our brains and had pizza w/ bacardi breezer for lunch... [ Yes, you read right...] Then went to tutoring sessions for an hour and right after we had calligraphy class that lasted until 5:30pm. Before we went back to the dorm I took a picture of the trash can that said---> Smoking kills sperm.... LOL We immediately went back to our rooms to drop off our heavy ass book, went to the bank and was starving! After the whole bank ordeal, we headed straight to the Korean BBQ place that had great food.. On the way there, we passed a tiny little puppy that was white and had brown spots and just wiggled its butt while it walked..It kind of looked like a tiny cat with no leash..lol This is what China offers haha. When we were near the Korean BBQ place, I passed by a cafe that was called ' HUMP CAFE' LOL... As soon as we got to the Korean BBQ we ordered mad food! We had chopped pork (3 plates worth), 1 plate of ox tongue, 1 plate of beef, 2 bowls of Spicy Ramen Korean style and 5 bowls of rice..On the side we had 3 bottles of beer. We basically chatted for a long time about random things (mostly inappropriate comments) ...We ate for like 2 hours then headed towards Bridge Cafe for some good drinks..It was basically 10pm by the time we headed back to the dorm...Now it's 1am and Im off to bed after a long day... Friday is PANDAS!!!!!!!!! Saturday is Forbidden City... Sunday is well...death lol

Great Wall of China!

Hello all,

Today is July 4th so you guys will probably be setting up your lawn chairs out where ever you guys are and resting w/ several plates of yummy food and waiting for the fireworks....while I climbed the GREAT WALL OF CHINA! I woke up today bright and early at 6:30am to get ready for the trip ahead. Shower, sunscreen SPF 70, bug spray, bottles of water, extra shirt, umbrella and of course a camera to take our hard work climbing the ancient structure. We got to the bus at 7:30am which left on time for 2hrs to reach the bottom of the wall. People were either asleep or awake snapping pictures of the trip to the wall. I was busy taking pictures so I didn't really sleep, but was just anxious to see one of the great wonders of the world---which can be seen

As I stepped out of the bus, it was surreal because everywhere was buses and little souvenir shops selling 'i have climbed the great wall' t-shirts and Mao paraphernalia..We had to make rounds to the bathroom because I doubt there be any on the actual wall. We got our tickets and began our climb up....oh dear god! We were sooooo lucky we went before the crowd and the sun rising over our heads. As we began our climb, sweat began to drop and accumulate! The climb itself I lost track of time, I was just thinking oh man, please let the next stairs led to the actual wall..Eventually we reached the wall itself and it was definitely worth it. The breeze, the view and just the epic-ness of it all was amazing! It was really an experience to be on top of that structure and to see what people might has saw all those years ago and follow the steps of the wall...(it's really slanted!)

Since we were there about 9:30am the sun wasn't out quite yet so it wasn't that bad, although I do believe I got some tanning done. There were brief moments of breeze when ever we needed it so it was really nice. There was a cute little kitty cat that meowed at us as we were climbing the wall..I was sad that I could not pet it because I did not know where it had been..but it was quite cute regardless..As we were making our way on the wall, we of course took massive amounts of pictures with us being silly :) What is a visit to the great wall of china without some silly/martial arts pictures lol Last year I have heard tales of giant mutant bugs that followed them and mosquitoes up the wazoo, but we were lucky enough to only have the mutant bugs following us but no bites.. As we were getting close to going down to the bus again, we took jumping pictures although I epically failed that...I never do good jumping pictures although I do like our group martial art poses :D As we were making our way down, mad people started heading up the wall so we were lucky to get there early enough to take some nice pictures without that many people. When we reached the bottom near where our bus was parked, I bargained for an awesome panda hat and some postcards lol Once we all got on the bus, we were all more or less knocked out until we reached school again..Talk about wipe out. I have uploaded the pictures along with other China photos on facebook so you guys can check it out.. (here are some)

The camel we saw right off the bus

Guardian Cat!

We made it up the Wall! :D

Please don't shoot..

Some martial arts pics on the Great Wall, of course! :P
Overboard!

Victory is MINE... puhahaha xD

And something for the way back... :D

First test, puppies, and THE GREAT WALL ...coming soon.

So today was my first day of exam---thank god that's over with..I can actually rest for like 1 hr... After one hour of rest, I had to meet up with a friend and we basically went shopping, ate shabu shabu, drank tsing tao and shopped some more...I did the more exploring and walking ever all in one day!!! It's kinda sad that I've been here for a week now and JUST went exploring..
While exploring i saw the cutest little puppy!! It was white and had light brown spots on it and it was just the cutest thing alive! I sooo wanted to run away with it :) then as I continued to walk down I saw a cute lil boy running around in a mohawk! A legit one! It was great, I kind of wish I had a picture of him just doing his thing with his cool mohawk.. then eventually on the next block I saw another little boy with a left cut shape haircut on the front of his head...(you have to be chinese to understand this.....) it was just too funny :P
Then went to a nice pho place for dinner and then FINALLY headed back to my room at like 10pm...Night life at Wu is popping lol...I have to get up at 6ish to prep for the GREAT WALL OF CHINAAAAAAA! Yes, I will be climbing the great wall on 4thh of July hahaha I find that really funny..It'll take at least 2 hours to get to the great wall, probably an hour or so climbing the damn thing...Another few hours running around and taking pictures then climbing down and passing out in the bus....oh yeah, great independence day---kind of hard core work out if you ask me...not much eating at all lol
Have a great 4th of July peoples and I'll post as soon as I rest from the major climbing on China's most historical site.

Sunday 6/28

Today is the last day of freedom before classes start. Woke up at 5:30ish today but went back to sleep. After a while I got up and started watching TV dramas…Having a TV in the room that broadcast dramas is a bad idea, but it’s a great way of learning Chinese lol. I also went shopping for a bag because I forgot to bring one to China, but I got a great brown one that has a zipper so it’s a safer bag than the velcro bags. We have our orientation tonight w/ everyone and my roommate is still not here. I have yet to explore the campus but I’ll get to that eventually. Back to Chinese dramas until orientation and dinner time.

Add on:

~ I just came back from the meeting, and boy do I have to study… Basically the run down is a test everyday and a written exam along w/ oral presentation every Friday but we have the afternoon off after that. Saturdays we have cultural events such as Forbidden City or the Great Wall of China. Sundays are for resting and studying. Now off to write Chinese characters until I sleep so I have a head start on my studies.

Jet Lag Day #1

(Hi, everyone, this is Shirley. Sim will be sending her blogs to me to post them onto this website, as it is blocked in China. Enjoy her blogs, everyone! :D )

Friday 26th
I’m now settled in my room at BLCU. It’s not much but it’ll do; shower, tables, closets plus a working A/C, Fridge and even a TV. I landed in Beijing around 9:30ish but due to the Avian Flu type A the plane was going through a check-up where they took our temperature through a scanner. There were a few people who didn’t pass and had to be re-checked. Later we were told that there was a girl who was checked three times and still didn’t pass it so she was quarantined. People around her was also ‘stamped’ with their health papers telling them don’t move around too much and that the government might call them to check up on their health after a week or so. Just my bloody luck, the first time being in China and I get stamped.
I am now unpacked, everything is more or less in place and waiting for WenWen to take me to eat some grub and then head to the supermarket to pick up some stuff my mom forgot to pack like lotion and tooth paste!! ><’ Nancy and I are the first one here from MHC but another girl will be here tonight from Mongolia. People will start piling up starting tomorrow and finally Sunday we will have our orientation then it’s straight to work. I am still feeling a little light-headed so I’ll be taking it easy. I’m hoping to have internet soon.

24hrs and counting...

Monday 6/24
~ Monday was the last day I would see any of my friends. Shirley gathered the crew (who were in the city and able to come out on a monday) and we met at Ctown's Starbucks. Shirley was the first to arrive and followed by P.G. , Ashley T. , Lis , Sayeeda and finally Sharon S. We started talking and then Sharon and I realized that we were on the same flight together to Korea lol It was great.

Sharon- so when are you heading to China?
Me- I'm flying from JFK on Wed night. How about you? When you going to Korea?
Sharon- no way! I'm going to JFK on Wed night too. It's flying at midnight.
Me-No freaking way! Hahaha, we might be on the same flight!
Sharon- are you terminal 4? Last year was Ashley and now you?
Me- No idea, but I don't think there's a lot of midnight flights out of JFK lol

I ran into Annie H. from middle school since she just transferred to work in that branch. Once we were all there, we headed to Dim Sum! :D We ordered and started chowing down while chatting..After a while Lis had to leave and so there were 6. After we payed Ashley had to leave so there were 5. After that I went to Spring St. Park to relive some old memories and met up w/ D for a bit. After a while we decided to watch Star Trek :) it was awesome!!!! At the end, we had to say our goodbyes as we headed to our seperate trains.

Tuesday 6/25
~ Woke up to do little errands like calling BOA to notify them that I'll be heading to China. Now I'm updating my I-pod playlist and writing down addresses so I know where to send snail mail. Tonight will be my last meal with my family. Although I got word that some IYF people are in China so I hope to meet up w/ them. It's been 3 years since I last saw them so that'll be great :D
But truth be told, I'll miss everyone. <3 Until China

Packing is a B*

I have 9 more days until I leave for China through a Korean Airline. I'll be waiting at the Korean International Airport for 4 hrs before embarking on another flight to Beijing,China. I've been packing slowly with little things left to stuff into my luggage like anti-bacterial hand sanitizers and hand wipes.. I'm getting anxious but should be okay.

Will update more when the days are closer to departure.
